About us
Who we are
We are a non-profit organisation run by and for people with experience of living with fatigue.
Our team of directors, supporters and volunteers combines many skills, broad experience and a shared intention to rethink wellbeing with fatigue in mind.
What we do
• Design retreats for people living with fatigue
• Talk about wellbeing, with fatigue in mind
• Teach wellbeing providers about fatigue, and how to adapt their offerings
Why we do it
The vision for Wellbeing in Spoonfuls was born out of frustration that so many wellbeing retreats and activities are inaccessible for people living with fatigue. Even with the post-Covid boom in online wellbeing offerings many barriers remain, because the wellbeing sector is mostly run by and for the well.
How we do it
Everything we do is designed by and for people living with fatigue, including the way we work.
Our values create a safe space for us to gently bring about our vision.
Everything in spoonfuls:
small tasks, when energy allows
Slow and steady:
gentle pace, long timelines
Be kind:
to ourselves and to each other
Inspire change:
raise awareness, provide tools
Why spoonfuls?
We regularly use spoon theory to describe – and understand – our experience of living with fatigue.
This wonderfully simple theory was created over dinner one day in 2003 by Christine Miserandino, who lives with Lupus. She was trying to explain to her dinner companion in simplified terms how people with chronic conditions wake up each day with limited energy to spend on tasks. Spoon theory helps to explain the complex decisions about expending energy that we have to make every day.
Wellbeing activities cost energy too. We’re helping providers adapt so their offerings require fewer spoons of energy to get the benefits.
